Who would have thought the difference in this game would be between 4.5 to 5.5 points. With the score deadlocked at 14-9 throughout the game, that point made all the difference. One point! For those who had the game at -5.5, don’t send too much hate mail to the Saints kicker, who missed 2 field goals including a 32-yard chip shot.
Tonight’s lesson: Always shop around for the best line.
Covers.com allows you to do just that. While the Hilton had this game at -5.5, the Mirage had it at -4.5. If you bet online, BetUS had this game at -4.5, while Bodog had this game at -6.
Hopefully you took got that game at -4.5 or -5. Brandon and I got this one at -5 where most books had the line before kickoff. A day too late from getting it at -4.5, which would have brought in a very nice win. The Yahoo Pick ‘Em League had this spread at -5 so nobody came out ahead. It was a plain, old vanilla push! However, you also have to consider yourself lucky if you did take that line because the Vikings missed an extra point which would have given the Vikings the cover with the 4.5 or 5 points.
That’s the NFL for you and that’s why Vegas employs professionals to come up with the lines.
We are less than an hour away from kickoff. The Saints are ready to take on the Vikings in New Orleans and I’m taking the Saints -5, which I’m giving a 3/5 rating to. This is the Saints SuperBowl homecoming and that place is going to be off the hook. I heard today that the last 10 Super Bowl Champions have never lost their season opener the following year. I didn’t look into that one. You may want to prove me wrong on that one, but regardless of whether it’s true or not, you should definitely expect the Saints to come out on top. Whether they will cover is a different story. The Vikings covered 3.5 in the NFC Championship, but I’m looking for Favre to take a step back this year now that he’s a month away from turning 41 and without Sidney Rice.
What I wanted to mention though was to make sure that your picks are in for THE PASS RUSH PICK ‘EM LEAGUE. It’s not too late to sign up! THE PASS RUSH: It's like shooting fish in a barrel.
The NFL season is finally here! We started off the college football season in week 1 with a bang. We opened Thursday night going 2-0. Some picks didn’t pan out out on Saturday, but like I mentioned throughout the week, there weren’t any games that I really loved so I played the week rather lightly. I did end up hitting a 4-team teaser though at 2:1 odds, which helped build up the bank roll going into Monday Night’s big game between the Virginia Tech and Boise State. By taking advantage of the line movement, I nailed my teaser of Boise State and the over as my biggest play of the week with plenty of ammo ready for week 1 of the NFL. Onto this week’s picks against the spread — a.k.a. your NFL Cliff Notes. Don’t forget to sign up for the pick ’em league (winner gets a free NFL Shop custom t-shirt)! League sign in info is on the right.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS @ NEW ORLEANS SAINTS -4.5
Great game to open the season on Thursday. Last year in the playoffs I called that the Saints would win by exactly 3 points and that the Vikings would cover the 3.5 points that they were getting. Guess what happened? Precisely that. That was my moment of glory. What will happen this season on opening day? Given that the Vikings are without Sydney Rice, I’m more confident in the Saints covering this time around. Plus, add in the homecoming from their Super Bowl, which should have their entire team and fans amped up, and the Saints should cruise to a victory with ease. However, I don’t expect the Saints to …
As I await the start of the NFL season like an addict going through withdrawal, I would like to welcome old friends and new acquaintances to THE PASS RUSH. By the looks of our pick ’em league, it’s good to see some old names show up on the list. THE PASS RUSH’s pick ’em league is for only the most distinguished gentlemen of this website. By distinguished gentlemen, I mean loyal readers who contribute to the site on a weekly basis to talk football. You may register by checking the info here.
THE PASS RUSH has been in business for four years now, opening up to the interwebs in 2007. In four year’s time, we have handedly taken the books to the woodshed via weekly NFL and NCAA football picks against the spread. Like any season, it’s a roller coaster. There will be highs and lows, ups and downs, thrilling victories, and crushing defeats. There will be injuries, blown calls, turnovers, and ludicrous penalties that will combine to conspire against you, but you must not let them affect you.
During the 2009 football season, we immediately got off to a hot start. My philosophy to start last year was to bet against the reh-tards of the NFL. It was like a bully picking on the kid with down syndrome — completely shameless and without remorse. By betting faithfully against the Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers week-in and week-out, the first half of the season was a phenomenal success. It was like sports books were giving away free money each week. What happened in the second half you ask? The books wised up and …
THE PASS RUSH’S Pick ‘Em league will enter its second season this year. The pick ’em league is ran through Yahoo! Sports where you enter and track your picks. Like last season, I encourage everyone to sign up. The cost is free. The prize if you win the league is a free NFL Shop custom t-shirt from yours truly. The league was great last year. We had over 20 teams compete for the title and it ended up going to Deez Nuts from Minneapolis, Minnesota who picked a t-shirt of his hometown Vikings. Every week was competitive and it came down to the wire.
Feel free to invite your friends for a shot at the title. Thank you for being a part of THE PASS RUSH. We are also now on Twitterand you can also follow us on Facebook.
Update: Glad to see that Deez Nuts is back to defend his title along with the return of many other Pass Rush Readers.…
While Super Bowl 2010 Odds have the Colts as a 5.5 point favourite, which will be a tough margin, the over/under line of 56 looks to be a much more profitable number to bet on. When the Saints and the Colts hit the field for the NFL Championship game in Miami this Sunday, there is a good chance that it will be a high scoring affair.
The Indy offence is led by Peyton Manning who, with his ability to reading and react to the defence before the snap, put up a league best 4,500 passing yards while only being sacked 10 times in the regular season. Having already won a Super Bowl in 2006, the four time AP NFL Most Valuable player knows how to deal with the pressure and intensity of the big game and will looked upon as a leader on and off the field. He should have a better chance of connecting with All-Pro wide-receiver Reggie Wayne then he did during the Conference Championships.
Even though Peyton Manning put up great individual numbers last game, he only connected with Wayne and tight-end Dallas Clarke for seven receptions and 90 yards combined. Considering both were over 100 receptions and 1100 yards on the regular season, they should have much more productive games this weekend. This does not bode well for the Saints defence.
The one big question mark on the Colts defence is the health of Dwight Freeney’s ankle. The All Pro defensive end is one of the best pass rushers in the league and, along with Robert Mathis, will be the key to Indy’s pass defence. Pro Bowler safety Antoine Bethea is expected to be in the line-up as well after seeing limited practice time last week …
